Men and contraception

There are a wide variety of contraceptive methods are available. For men there are only two main methods of contraception condoms and vasectomy.

Condoms, are designed to space or delay a pregnancy and are also the most effective method at reducing the risk of sexually transmitted infections. Vasectomy is a permanent method of contraception, commonly used once the family is complete or if the man does not wish to have children.

Ideally, contraception is a joint responsibility, and the method chosen should reflect the needs and concerns of both partners. When using a male method, such as condoms, or vasectomy, the male partner has the primary responsibility.

But even when a couple uses a female method, such as oral contraceptives IUD or implant, the male partner can play an important role in its use and effectiveness.
