Visiting a Marie Stopes International Clinic

Marie Stopes International see many women from Ireland who visit us for abortion services. Our clinics are comfortable places to visit and we will support you every step of the way if you do decide to have an abortion.

We will keep all of your details and any other information that you provide us with completely private and confidential.

Typically, at one of our clinics you will:

  • See a nurse or doctor
  • Be informed of your abortion treatment options
  • Have the opportunity to speak to a counsellor if you wish to talk further about your situation. We also have counsellors available to speak to you over the telephone before you travel if you would prefer this option
  • Have a scan if necessary to check how many weeks pregnant you are
  • The nurse will check your medical history and you may have a blood test (finger prick test). You will also be offered a chlamydia test

Under the terms of the 1967 Abortion Act, we will need to ask you the reason for your request for an abortion and two doctor’s signatures are needed for the abortion to take place. We can provide these signatures at the clinic.

You will receive in depth information about your treatment options during your consultation which will either take place over the phone before you travel or at the clinic.

Marie Stopes International provides abortion treatment up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, more information about your abortion treatment options is available here . We will discuss your options with you at the time of booking your treatment. Please note: at Marie Stopes International, medical abortion (also known as the abortion pill) is not availble to women who travel from Ireland.

After your abortion

It is recommended that you have a pregnancy test and a check-up about three weeks after an abortion. You will be given full information at the clinic about what to expect afterwards and will be given written information to take away with you. You can view our abortion aftercare video here.

If you are worried about anything at all or think you may still be pregnant you can call us 24 hours a day on 0845 371 4038 or 0044 845 371 4038 if calling from outside of the UK; and we will be able to give you advice over the phone.

You can also visit Marie Stopes Reproductive Choices for a face to face appointment.

If you are experiencing difficult emotions after your appointment, we can arrange for you to talk to one of our specialist counsellors.
