Contraceptive implant
What is it? A small stick which is inserted under the skin in the arm. It slowly releases the hormone progestogen which stops ovulation and thickens cervical mucus which prevents sperm from reaching an egg. It also thins the lining of the womb to prevent an egg implanting.

- Does not interfere with the spontaneity of sex
- Normal levels of fertility will return after the implant is removed
Considerations:
- May cause irregular bleeding and may stop periods altogether
- Some medicines may stop the implant from working
- Possible side effects include mood changes, breast tenderness and spotty skin
- Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections
