Contraceptive patch
What is it? The contraceptive patch looks like a small plaster that is applied to the skin. It works by releasing two hormones oestrogen and progestogen through the skin. These hormones prevent ovulation (release of an egg from the ovary) and thicken the cervical mucus, creating a barrier to prevent sperm from entering the uterus.
Advantages:
- May make periods regular, lighter and less painful
- Easy to use
- Does not interfere with the spontaneity of sex
- Normal levels of fertility will return after use
- May offer some protection against cancer of the womb and ovaries
Considerations:
- Not always suitable for some women including smokers aged over 35
- Possible side effects include headaches and skin reaction at the site of the patch
- Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections
