Female sterilisation

What is it? Female sterilisation is a surgical procedure to seal the fallopian tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. This prevents the egg and sperm meeting, so a pregnancy can't occur. The eggs are then reabsorbed by the body.

    Advantages:
  • Works immediately
  • No side effects
  • No longer have to think about contraception
  • Not affected by any other medicines
  • Does not interfere with the spontaneity of sex
    Considerations:
  • It is a permanent method
  • May experience some discomfort during, and a short time after the procedure
  • A small increased risk of ectopic pregnancy
  • Periods may be heavier after sterilisation
  • Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections
