Vasectomy

What is it? A major surgical procedure that involves sealing tubes (called vas deferens) that carry sperm. This stops sperm entering the ejaculate fluid.

    Advantages:
  • Has no effect on male hormones or sex drive
  • Simple and quick procedure
  • No longer have to think about contraception once post treatment sperm tests show all clear
  • Not affected by any other medicines
  • Does not interfere with the spontaneity of sex
    Considerations:
  • It is a permanent method and is not easily reversed
  • After vasectomy contraception must be used while sperm samples are tested to make sure the procedure has been successful
  • May experience slight discomfort during the procedure
  • Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections
