Vasectomy
What is it? A major surgical procedure that involves sealing tubes (called vas deferens) that carry sperm. This stops sperm entering the ejaculate fluid.
Advantages:
- Has no effect on male hormones or sex drive
- Simple and quick procedure
- No longer have to think about contraception once post treatment sperm tests show all clear
- Not affected by any other medicines
- Does not interfere with the spontaneity of sex
Considerations:
- It is a permanent method and is not easily reversed
- After vasectomy contraception must be used while sperm samples are tested to make sure the procedure has been successful
- May experience slight discomfort during the procedure
- Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections
