The morning after pill
Description
Emergency contraception also known (incorrectly) as the 'morning after pill', must be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, the sooner the better. The pill works by stopping an egg from being released, stopping the sperm from reaching an egg, or preventing a fertilised egg from settling in the uterus.
Availability
The morning after pill is available on prescription from your GP or other specialist clinics such as Marie Stops Reproductive Choices. If you need help quickly call us on Dublin (01) 830 0630 – please don’t feel embarrassed as many women come to see us for this.
Effectiveness
95% within 12 hours after unprotected sex, 54% effective if taken 72 hours after unprotected sex.
