At your consultation we can discuss the most appropriate STI tests for you with you. Infections we can advise on and test for include:
HIV testing
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a viral infection that affects the body’s defence system so that it cannot fight against infections. It is sexually transmitted and can be passed on through blood. Once someone is infected with HIV, there is now way of curing it. Treatment for HIV is constantly evolving and many people living with HIV feel well and live much longer than they used to.
Chlamydia testing
Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted bacterial infection. The majority of people will have no symptoms and if left untreated, chlamydia can cause serious problems including infertility. It is estimated that chlamydia affects one in ten young people. The infection is very easily treated with antibiotics.
Hepatitis A & B testing
Hepatitis A & B are viral infections that affect the liver; they are usually sexually transmitted or passed on through blood. Vaccinations are available.
Syphilis testing
Syphilis is not as common as other sexually transmitted infections. It usually develops in three stages - the first stage is know as primary syphilis, the second stage is known as secondary syphilis, and the last stage, tertiary syphilis. Most people with syphilis will experience symptoms but if left untreated it can lead to serious health problems including damage to international organs, the heart, brain, bones and the nervous system. Syphilis is treated with antibiotics.
Gonorrhoea testing
Gonorrhoea is a common sexually transmitted bacterial infection. Some people with gonorrhoea will not have any symptoms, others may experience unusual yellow/green discharge, pain when passing urine and pain low in the abdomen. If left untreated, gonorrhoea can lead to serious problems including infertility. Gonorrhoea is treated with antibiotics.
Thrush testing
Thrush is a common fungal infection that can affect different parts of the body, most notably the vagina. It is not sexually transmitted but can be affected by sex. It is very easily treated with creams, pessaries and pills.
